Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening exposes more of the natural tooth by reshaping the gum and, when needed, the underlying bone. It may help your dentist restore a damaged tooth or improve the proportions of teeth and gums in your smile.

For restoring a damaged tooth

When decay or a fracture extends below the gumline, crown lengthening may expose enough sound tooth for a filling or crown. We assess whether the tooth has a reasonable long-term outlook and work with your dentist to plan the restoration.

For the appearance of your smile

If excess gum covers part of the teeth, crown lengthening may create a more even gumline and reveal more tooth structure. A gummy smile can have several causes, so this procedure is not suitable for everyone.

Planning your treatment

We assess your teeth, gums, supporting bone and smile before discussing what can realistically be achieved. The plan includes alternatives, costs and potential effects such as sensitivity or changes in the spaces between teeth.

What to expect

Treatment is performed with local anaesthetic. The amount of gum and bone reshaping depends on your needs. Some tenderness and swelling are expected, and we provide personalised aftercare instructions.

Healing before the final restoration

Initial healing occurs over the following weeks, but the gumline may take several months to stabilise. If a crown is planned, we coordinate its timing with your dentist. Follow-up visits help us assess healing before the next stage.
