Peri-implant Disease Treatment

Bleeding or swelling around a dental implant deserves attention, even without pain. We assess the tissues around the implant and recommend treatment to reduce inflammation and help protect its supporting bone.

What is peri-implantitis

Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the tissues around a dental implant. It is associated with bacterial plaque and causes loss of the bone supporting the implant. Without treatment, it can progress and may lead to implant loss.

Signs worth checking

Watch for bleeding when cleaning, redness, swelling, an unpleasant taste, pus or changes in the gumline. Symptoms may be subtle. If an implant or its crown feels loose, arrange a prompt assessment; movement can have several causes.

Assessment and initial treatment

We examine the implant, assess cleaning access and measure the surrounding tissues. X-rays help us evaluate bone levels, ideally alongside previous records. Treatment usually begins with professional cleaning, guidance for home care and management of contributing factors. We then reassess the response.

When further treatment is needed

Peri-implantitis may require surgery to access and clean the implant surface. Selected defects may be suitable for reconstructive treatment, but lost bone cannot always be restored. If an implant has a poor outlook, removal may be the most appropriate option. We explain the alternatives and likely limitations.

Ongoing maintenance

Treatment aims to control the disease; retaining the implant cannot be guaranteed. Regular monitoring and professional maintenance remain essential because inflammation can recur. We tailor the recall interval and cleaning advice to your needs.
